Any place on the engine that's not insulated should have worked (what you did sounds ok).

I have a GZ250 that this has happened to on occasion but very intermittently. I have found if it's not producing a spark, it will Never produce a spark until I turn the switch off, wait a second, and then turn the switch back on (and hit the starter again). Then it "might" produce a spark. I suspect a bad connection somewhere, but I can't seem to locate it. Maybe sometimes the ignitor (engine control computer) doesn't boot properly when power is applied??? (If it's that smart.) I don't know... Maybe a bad switch? (lights burn though). If you should happen to figure out what's causing it, please let us know. I've changed the plug several times on mine also and it still happens occasionally, but for me ONLY when starting. Never when running. So it might be a different problem. But maybe something to try (turning ignition switch off & on before hitting starter).

Good luck!
